Ecommerce Product Pricing Model

Because payment processors and marketplace platforms calculate their fee on the final selling price, traditional markup on cost underestimates the required price.

Fixed Per-Unit Cost = Product Cost + Packaging + Shipping + Other Costs
Required Selling Price = Fixed Per-Unit Cost / (1 - Target Margin % / 100 - Fee % / 100)
Percentage Fees = Required Selling Price × (Fee % / 100)
Net Profit = Required Selling Price - Fixed Costs - Percentage Fees
Worked Example: Product $20, Packaging $2, Shipping $3 (Total Fixed = $25), 5% fee, 20% margin:
1. Divisor = 1 - 0.20 - 0.05 = 0.75
2. Selling Price = $25 / 0.75 = $33.33
3. Platform fee = 5% of $33.33 = $1.67
4. Net profit = $33.33 - $25 - $1.67 = $6.67 (exactly 20.0% of $33.33).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does adding a 20% margin directly to costs result in lower profit?

Adding 20% to cost is a markup, not a margin. A 20% markup on $25 yields $30, which after a 5% fee leaves only $11.6% margin, well below your 20% target.

Does this model guarantee market sales?

No. This provides an objective accounting floor. Real-world sales also depend on competitive pricing, market demand, customer perceived value, and marketing effectiveness.
