How to Price Products for Ecommerce Profitability
A comprehensive breakdown of hidden costs, platform transaction fees, and mathematical formulas required to price products for sustainable margins.
The Anatomy of Product Cost
Many new online merchants calculate price by multiplying wholesale acquisition cost by two (a practice known as "keystone pricing"). In modern ecommerce, this almost guarantees unprofitability because it ignores fulfillment, returns, and variable marketplace transaction fees.
1. Direct Unit Costs
- Manufacturing/Wholesale: The FOB price per unit from your supplier.
- Custom Packaging: Branded boxes, protective bubble mailers, custom tissue, and tape ($1.50–$4.00/unit).
- Inbound Freight & Customs: The amortized cost of freight shipping and duties from overseas factories to your domestic warehouse.
2. Fulfillment & Shipping
If you offer "free shipping", that shipping is not free to you. You must absorb shipping postage and fulfillment handling directly into the base product price.
3. Marketplace & Processing Fees
Payment gateways (Stripe, PayPal) charge approximately 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. Marketplaces like Etsy (6.5% transaction + listing fees) and Amazon (15% referral fee) take substantial percentages of the gross retail price, not your profit.
The Mathematical Solution for Ecommerce Pricing
Because marketplace cuts are deducted from the final retail price, use this exact formula:
Worked Example: Pricing an Artisan Ceramic Mug
- Unit manufacturing cost: $8.00
- Custom packaging & box: $2.00
- Average absorbed shipping: $6.00
- Total Fixed Unit Cost = 8 + 2 + 6 = $16.00
- Marketplace fee (e.g. Etsy/Shopify): 10%
- Target net margin: 25%
Divisor = 1 - 0.25 (margin) - 0.10 (fee) = 0.65
Required Retail Price = $16.00 / 0.65 = $24.62
Verification:
Retail price: $24.62
Marketplace fee (10% of $24.62): $2.46
Total cost: $16.00 + $2.46 = $18.46
Net profit: $24.62 - $18.46 = $6.16 (exactly 25.0% of $24.62)!
